ACROSS THE BAY

A foghorn-blast spans the distance
Just across the bay,
But for all my reach, that ship could be
A million miles away.

And though the warm beach sand surrounds—
The lapping waves refresh—
My heart will sail aboard that ship
To better shores than this.

To ports unknown and islands far
I’ll gladly find my way,
For the million miles of distance
Are just across the bay!

Across the bay, aboard the ship
That sails for ports unseen—
Across the world to lands beyond
And lands within my dream.
